Repair or Replace?

When considering the question of whether to repair or replace HVAC equipment, the first major factor to consider is the age of the system. If it is more than 10 years old, it may be best to replace it. Although well maintained equipment might last as long as 15 to 20 years, it may not be economical to keep it for that long. Over time, efficiency can be affected by both wear and out-dated technology. In some situations, wear and tear may cause factors such as rust or cracks, which can lead to toxins such as carbon monoxide affecting indoor air quality.

Because heating equipment tends to last longer than air conditioning systems, situations in which they share components can be tricky. If you wish to replace only part of the equipment involved, it is essential that compatibility issues are considered. Other things to think about are:

  • Whether or not matching of replacement parts be done
  • Quality of the original load calculations
  • Whether regularly scheduled maintenance was followed
  • Incentives for replacement

Typical reasons why you may choose to repair rather than replace your heating and air conditioning system include:

  • The structure may be nearing the end of its use
  • The facility or home may require modification before energy efficiency can be achieved
  • Cash flow or incentives are not available for new equipment
  • If new equipment technology is soon to be released, delaying purchase may be wise

Conversely, the following factors may make the decision to replace your system a better option:

  • Payback or return on investment in monthly energy bills
  • Excessive repair costs better invested in new system
  • Incentives such as rebates or tax credits
  • Improved performance with new technology
  • More environmentally friendly equipment options
